Few parts of Maryland hold as much history in such a small area as Washington County. In September of 1862, the Maryland Campaign brought two major engagements to the area around Boonsboro and Sharpsburg. Today, the land is preserved and open to visitors, which makes an Antietam weekend getaway a meaningful way to spend a few days.
Belle Orchard, in the quaint town of Boonsboro, puts you close to all of it. Here is how to build a weekend around the history without rushing.
The Battle of South Mountain took place on September 14, 1862, just days before Antietam, and it unfolded along the mountain gaps near Boonsboro. Turner’s Gap, Fox’s Gap, and Crampton’s Gap are part of South Mountain State Battlefield, and interpretive markers help explain what happened at each location.
Back in town, the Boonsborough Museum of History is a small local stop that adds context about the community. It is a good way to connect the battlefield sites to the place where you are staying.
Starting here gives your weekend context. You see how the campaign began before you visit the larger battlefield at Sharpsburg. It also pairs well with a walk at Washington Monument State Park or Gathland State Park, both of which sit on the same mountain.
Spend a Full Day at Antietam National Battlefield
The Battle of Antietam took place on September 17, 1862, and it remains the bloodiest single day in American military history. The battlefield in Sharpsburg is a short drive from Boonsboro, and it is best explored without a tight schedule.
Begin at the visitor center, where exhibits and a film give you an overview. From there, the driving route connects marked stops across the battlefield, including the Dunker Church, the Sunken Road, and the Burnside Bridge. Antietam National Cemetery is also nearby and is a quiet place to reflect.
Plan for several hours, bring comfortable shoes, and leave room to stop and read. Many guests find the landscape itself, the open farmland and stone bridges, tells much of the story.
If your group includes guests of different ages or interests, the driving route is helpful. Some people can walk to each stop while others stay close to the car, and everyone still sees the same places.
If your group wants a second day of history, Harpers Ferry National Historical Park in West Virginia is a short drive from Boonsboro. The lower town has preserved buildings, museum exhibits, and walking paths, and the meeting of the Potomac and Shenandoah Rivers makes the setting memorable. The park recommends parking at the Visitor Center and taking the shuttle bus into Lower Town, since parking in town fills early, especially on weekends. The Appalachian Trail also passes through Lower Town.
A history weekend can be full, so the evenings matter. After a day outdoors, Belle Orchard offers a place to sit with coffee on the patio, gather by the fire pit, and talk through what you saw. Staying together as a group means the conversation continues, whether you are family members sharing a long weekend or friends who have wanted to make this trip for years.
Our Experiences page lists the curated options available during your stay, from private dining to creative workshops, if you would like to add something quiet to the schedule.
Boonsboro is a thoughtful base for anyone who wants to understand this part of Maryland more fully. We would be glad to welcome you.
